The question of communication with the Police Stations
at Lama, Cheung Chau, and Tai-Q, ei tuer by telephone or
wireless telephone was first proposed officially in August
1913 by the Acting D.P.W. As a wireless expert was expected
in the Colony to erect the new station tue matter was held over
for his advice,
Before the wireless expert arrived, war broke out and
the scheme was dropped for purposes of economy and under pressure
of other work.
In August 1917 the question of improvement in the means
of communication with Cheung Chau, was raised by questions in
the Legislative Council by the member nominated, by the J.p's,
and the Government asked the Naval Au tho ri ties for the advice
of their wireless expert on the subject of the suggestion to
upe a wireless telephone system for the purpose. The advice
was against wireless telephones on account of the expert
manipulation required, and the Governor decided to let the
whole question of establisuing communications with the islands
by wireless or by telephone, stand over till the end of the
war, on the ground of the difficulty of obtaining the necessary
@quipment for either and of the necessity of economy in war
time.
questions of improved communication with Police Stations
are matters within the purview of the D.P.W. and C.8.P.
They do not primarily concern the District officers,
Moreover Mr.Hamilton was only appointed D.o. South in April
1917 and in August of that year he was aware that the question
as far as it concerned Cheung Chau was already under considera
tion.
